1862 Coal Bank School was the First School to Open in the “Tenino” area.  This school was before the name Tenino was introduced by the Northern Pacific Railroad.  According to Philip Northcraft’s personal journal, he helped construct the school and local citizens including Alexander Yantis contributed to the school fund. It was built on the Sears land claim. It is believed that Coal Bank school was later renamed Colvin School in 1918.  Colvin school went until 1942 and the building is still standing.

This was part of the old Coal Bank District #27.  Other schoolhouses were:

  • Stoney Point School near the end of Skookumchuck 1896-1942
